  Le Grand Prix FIDE d'Elista (Kalmoukie, Russie) a lieu du 13 au 29 décembre 2008.
  Michael Adams a annulé sa participation au Grand Prix. Magnus Carlsen a décliné l'invitation, Mohamad Al Modiahki et Yannick Pelletier ont déjà été remplacés après le retrait de leurs sponsors.
  Quatre nouveaux joueurs font donc leur apparition : Pavel Eljanov (Ukraine), Evgeny Alekseev (Russie), Vladimir Akopian (Arménie) et Ruslan Kasimdzhanov (Ouzbékistan).

  Le prix d'un voyage aller est de 7000 roubles par personne (environ 200 €).

Les participants et les officiels de la FIDE seront hébergés au "City Chess hotel" (2 étages, 35 chambres, situé à environ 3 km d'Elista et 10 km de l'aéroport). Le prix pour les autres personnes enregistrées par les participants est de 1800 roubles par jour d'hôtel (environ 50 €) et de 1500 roubles par jour de nourriture (environ 42 €).
